The Basics of Surviving in the Wilderness

Daily life use to evolve around wilderness survival. Even if you feel protected and safe in your cocoon of modern living it is still a good plan to have some of the survival skills that could keep you alive in a bad situation. These skill sets are not only for backpackers, sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts, although those are now the only people with such skills.

What are survival skills you ask? These are the techniques and know-how that could keep you alive in dangerous locations or hazardous conditions. Skills like these could save your life if you are stuck in a storm or earthquake or if you are stranded in a desert, jungle, or mountains. Some of the skills you should learn include how to build a shelter, how to pack a survival kit, how to gain clean drinking water, and how to build a fire. These are universal skills that could help you no matter what the situation or circumstance. These universal skills will be able to help you survive in any situation you find yourself in

Next well will look at some of these skills and give you a better understanding what they consist of. The order of focus for survival skills relate to the basic human needs and the circumstance you find yourself in. Shelter is usually the first task to take on when you find yourself in a bad situation, this will give you protection from the harsh conditions. You can create a lean-to shelter or a shelter with your poncho, the important thing is that you get yourself out of the harsh conditions.

Clean drinking water is the next important skill to surviving in an extreme condition. You can do this in several different manners, and it depends on where you find yourself. You could gather water from a flowing stream or river or if you are in the desert you could use a condensation trap. No matter where you gather water you should always boil it before you attempt to drink it.

To boil your water you will need fire, and this is the next survival skill you will need. Fire is useful for warmth as well as protection. You might think a fire is the most necessary survival skill but although it can make surviving easier and more comfortable, a shelter is still more important.

Next we will look at a first aid kit. Personally I pack a survival book and a first aid kit in my survival bag, the first aid kit is the most important equipment and I see it as imperative to surviving in the wilderness. Injuries need to be tended to before they get worse and could ruin any chance you have at surviving.
